Uncrop and Expand Images with AI

A photo that is the wrong shape usually means cropping away part of it. Our AI image extender does the opposite: it keeps your whole photo and paints in what lies beyond the frame, matched to its light, colours and texture. Pick 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 or Zoom out and download a wider or taller picture.

Nothing gets cropped

Your original photo stays in the middle of the new frame. Only the new strips around it are generated.

Preview before you run

The canvas shows where the new edges will go and the output size, so you know what you will get before spending a credit.

1 credit, a few seconds

Each run costs one credit and usually takes 10 to 20 seconds. If a run fails, the credit goes back to you automatically.

01

Turn a Vertical Photo into a Horizontal One

Choose 4:3 or 16:9 and the extender adds scenery on the left and right, so a phone photo fits a slide, a blog header, a YouTube thumbnail or a desktop wallpaper without cutting off the subject.

02

Expand a Landscape Image to a Square

Choose 1:1 and the extender grows the top and bottom of a wide shot, adding sky above and ground below, so the whole scene fits a feed post or a product grid instead of losing its sides.

03

Stretch a Square Post into a 9:16 Story

Choose 9:16 to turn a square post into a full-screen story, Reel or Short. The extender continues the picture above and below, so you no longer need blurred bars or a coloured fill.

04

Zoom Out to Give Your Subject Room

Zoom out adds the same margin on every side, as if the photo had been taken a step further back. Use it to free space for a headline, to stop a tight crop from touching the edges, or to prepare a frame for a slow zoom in a video.

Uncrop & AI Image Extender FAQs

How the uncrop tool expands an image, what it costs and how to get natural-looking results.

Last updated:

Our AI image extender, also called an uncrop or image expand tool, makes a photo bigger by painting new content past its original edges. Your whole photo stays in the frame and the added areas are generated to match it, so you can change the shape of an image without cropping anything away.

Yes! The AI image extender is free to try. New accounts start with free credits and each expansion costs just 1 credit, so your first images cost nothing. If a run fails, the credit goes back to you automatically. When your free credits run out, you can get more on the pricing page.

The AI studies the colours, light, textures and lines along the edges of your photo and continues them into the new area, blending the seam so the expansion looks like part of the original shot. You choose the shape (16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 or Zoom out) and the preview shows where the new edges will go.

The image extender accepts JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 20 MB. It works on photos, product shots, illustrations and AI-generated images. Images longer than 2560 px on a side are scaled down before expanding.

In most photos, yes. The extension looks most natural when the edges continue easily, such as sky, sea, walls, fields or fabric. If a face, hand or sign is cut by the border, the AI has to invent the rest, so check those areas and run again if something looks off.

Yes, you can upload any cropped photo and expand it. Keep in mind that the uncrop tool does not recover what was really outside the frame; it paints a believable continuation, so use it to complete a composition rather than to reveal hidden details.

The shape decides it: 16:9 and 4:3 extend left and right, 9:16 and 3:4 extend top and bottom, 1:1 extends the shorter sides, and Zoom out adds the same margin on every side. Run it again on the result to keep growing in the same direction.

Each side can grow by up to 40% of the photo’s shorter edge per run. A very tall photo may need two runs to reach 16:9; the note under the preview tells you before you run, and Edit this result lets you continue from where it stopped.

Start from the largest, sharpest copy you have, with the subject away from the edges. Photos with simple, continuous backgrounds expand most convincingly. If you need the final image bigger, enlarge it afterwards with the image upscaler.

Yes. Designers, marketers and creators use it to fit one photo into many placements, such as YouTube thumbnails, 9:16 stories, square feed posts and website banners, and to make a first frame for the AI video generator. Check fine details near the old edges before you publish.

When the expansion is done, click Download to save the full image. Every result is also stored in My Assets, so you can download it again later or open it on this page to extend it further.
